Do you have a result you would love to produce in your life? No matter the goal, big or small, most of us have a desired result that is still “out there.” Ask yourself this: why haven’t you created that result you want yet?

Lightning strikes

Picture this: you come up with a brilliant idea. You get really excited about it. You tell a friend about it. You can see this idea as reality in your mind. It’s going to be epic. It’s going to be inspiring. It’s going to be life changing.

And then you start thinking about it. I mean really thinking about it. And “it’s going to be epic” morphs into “it’s going to be hard.” What the heck? Last night you were pumped! Fired up! Ready to turn this mutha’ out!

What happened is your bright idea ran into its worst enemy: your conditioned brain.

Your conditioned brain

Your conditioned brain means well. Your conditioned brain is the physical manifestation of the sense your brain has been able to make out of the chaotic universe that exists all around you. It comes from what you’ve been taught about the world around you, from how to deal with people, to situations, to dangers and delights.

Your body relies on your conditioned brain to know what to do in any situation and keep it safe. But when your brain comes up against something you do not know, like a new idea, which is just a result projected into the future, your brain gets a little freaked out. If your brain doesn’t have a frame of reference for how the heck you’re going to get to that result, it starts putting the breaks on through thought, and subsequently feelings (the chemical equivalent of thoughts).

All of a sudden your brilliant idea that felt so good when you thought it up feels like a threat.

And your conditioned brain’s response to this new result you want to create in your life? RUN!

Changing thinking

Changing how you think is not an easy process, but is entirely possible. It takes a high level of awareness and some time, but you can train your brain to think how you need it to in order to create the result that you want.

Here are some tips on how to do just that:

  • Meditate – this is such a powerful tool for learning how to separate out from and observe your thoughts. If everyone meditated the world would be a much different place.
  • Thought Download – this is a tool I learned from my coach Brooke Castillo. Think of thought downloading as intentional journaling. You can just start writing any thoughts that come to mind, but to get specific, ask yourself a question like “why haven’t I achieved the result (fill in the blank)?” See what answers your brain throws back at you.
  • Get A Coach – Here’s the deal with a good coach, they’ll be able to show you your mind. They’ll help you pinpoint the thinking that is constraining you, and assist you in intentionally creating thoughts that will propel you toward the result you want. This is where the magic happens.

There are so many great coaches out there, and here are some of my favorites:

Brooke Castillo

Brendan Burchard

Byron Katie

Kara Lowentheil

Gregory Diamond

I’ll also use this moment to toot my own horn a bit. I’m certified health coach, certified life coach, and student of life that loves the human brain and exploring the power of thought. I would love to help you change your thinking.
